La 56e cérémonie des Oscars du cinéma, organisée par l'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), a récompensé les meilleurs films de 1983 et a eu lieu le 9 avril 1984 au Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, à Los Angeles, à partir de 18 h (heure du Pacifique). Vingt-deux catégories d'Oscars y ont été remises. Diffusée aux États-Unis par ABC, la cérémonie a été produite par Jack Haley Jr. et réalisée par Marty Pasetta. Johnny Carson l'a animée pour la cinquième fois — il avait présidé pour la première fois la 51e cérémonie en 1979, et pour la dernière fois la 54e en 1982. Neuf jours plus tôt, lors d'une cérémonie tenue au Beverly Hilton, à Beverly Hills, en Californie, le 31 mars, les Oscars scientifiques et techniques avaient été remis par Joan Collins et Arnold Schwarzenegger.
