La 51e cérémonie des Oscars du cinéma, organisée par l'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), a récompensé les films sortis en 1978 et a eu lieu le 9 avril 1979 au Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, à Los Angeles, à partir de 19 h (heure du Pacifique). Vingt-trois catégories d'Oscars y ont été remises. Diffusée aux États-Unis par ABC, la cérémonie a été produite par Jack Haley Jr. et réalisée par Marty Pasetta. L'humoriste et animateur Johnny Carson l'a présentée pour la première fois. Trois jours plus tôt, lors d'une cérémonie tenue au Beverly Hilton, à Beverly Hills, en Californie, les Oscars techniques avaient été remis par Gregory Peck et Christopher Reeve.
