Venise, 1596. Bassanio supplie son ami Antonio, un riche marchand, de lui prêter une somme importante afin de pouvoir courtiser Portia, une héritière fortunée ; mais Antonio ayant investi sa fortune à l'étranger, ils se tournent vers Shylock, un prêteur d'argent juif, pour lui demander un prêt.
